Some insurance companies in Ireland are offering up to a 30% discount on insurance rates if an advanced driving test is passed. Although not officially endorsed by the Irish government, passing an advanced test does offer benefits in both financial and safer driving terms.

One such company is IAM (the Irish Advanced Motorists group, click on the name for their website) for more information.

Another group is ROSPA Advanced Drivers Association, another UK based group.

Hibernian Igniton Scheme

Ignition is a scheme for less experienced drivers, which rewards successful drivers with a minimum discount of 20% on their Hibernian private motor insurance premium. We launched the scheme in August 2001, in association with the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) UK.

If you successfully finish the Ignition training, we will reward you with a premium discount ranging from 20% to 40% (on a Hibernian private motor policy). We will also offer you the option of another 10% discount for voluntarily not driving between 11pm and 6am.

Registered Driving Instructors

By engaging a registered driving instructor (RDI) and participating within the Driving Instructor Register structured 25 hour teaching syllabus, you will gain a minimum of 10% discount from your first year's insurance which will continue to year five in accident free driving, when taking out a new insurance policy in your own name thus saving more than a thousand euros to you initially, with further discounts to year five in accident free driving (may not be applicable to named drivers).

How it Works
As you undertake a structured lesson plan your Registered Driving Instructor (RDI) will complete a lesson by lesson plan identified by date and content which must be signed by the RDI and pupil until compilation, which must be then forwarded to the Administration of the National Register who will validate the lesson content and forward a discount certificate to the named person at their notified address.

You may then present this certificate to any member of the Irish Insurance Federation member insurance company (currently 98% of all companies operating in Ireland )to avail of the above discounts.

Should you have any further insurance queries please direct these to the Irish Insurance Federation 39 Molesworth Street, Dublin 2, Ireland.
