ACCIDENTS -
Any driver involved in an accident must stop his vehicle and remain at the scene of the accident for a reasonable time. However, if the vehicle or vehicles are obstructing the road or pose a danger to other road users, the position of the vehicles should be marked and the vehicles moved off the actual carriageway as quickly as possible.
A driver involved in an accident must, if requested by a Garda, give his name and address, the address at which the vehicle is being kept, the name and address of the vehicle owner, the vehicle registration number and evidence of insurance.
If no Garda is present, this information must be given to anyone involved in the accident or, upon request, to an independent witness.
Where a person or persons are injured and no Garda is present at the scene, the accident MUST be reported to the nearest convenient Garda Station.
Where property damage only is involved, it is not necessary to report the accident to the Gardai but the relevant information referred to above must be given to the person whose property has been damaged.
Accidents involving uninsured or visiting motorists should be reported to the Motor Insurers Bureau of Ireland, 3/4 South Frederick Street, Dublin 2.
Care must be taken when moving damaged or broken down vehicles and every effort made to warn oncoming traffic. Do not hesitate to seek the assistance of another road . user to warn other traffic. If your vehicle has a hazard warning system (all indicator lamps flashing at the same time) and there is no fuel a leakage switch it on. If you carry a reflectorised advance warning triangle (compulsory for heavy vehicles ahd buses) place it on the road at a distance sufficient to give adequate warning to approaching traffic.
If you arrive on the scene of an accident -
• Organise bystanders to warn other on-coming traffic from both directions, if this has not already been done. Park your own car at a safe place and a safe distance from the traffic. Be particularly careful at night to ensure that people warning traffic are visible (reflectorised armbands, torches, bright clothing). Switch on hazard warning lights, if fitted on any vehicle involved in the accident and if a reflectorised advance warning triangle is available use it. Switch off engine and headlights and apply brakes of vehicles involved.
• Summon assistance - ambulance, doctor, Gardai as quickly as possible.
• Keep any victims warm (coats, rugs should be placed round them).
• Do NOT move a victim unless there is a risk of fire or of the vehicle turning over.
• Do NOT attempt to lift a car off a victim without assistance.
• Do NOT give a victim anything to drink.
• Do NOT stay at the scene if there is adequate control and assistance.
