Park close to the kerb or edge of the roadway. Before leaving the vehicle, apply the handbrake, switch off the ignition and lock your vehicle. The door(s) of a vehicle must not be opened or kept opened unnecessarily when stationary, and passengers should not alight where this may cause danger or obstruction. Before opening any doors always check particularly for pedestrians and cyclists.

When parking a vehicle you must ensure that:-

• It does not interfere with normal traffic flow e.g. parking opposite another vehicle on a narrow road,

• It does not inconvenience, obstruct or endanger other traffic e.g. double parking, parking at road repairs,

• It does not obstruct an entrance to property without the owner's consent,

• It does not in any way obstruct entrance/exit to a fire station, or a hospital,

• It does not obstruct the view of a traffic sign or of the road ahead for other road users.

You should park as close as possible to and never more than 45centimetres from the kerb or edge of the road, and, save where a traffic sign indicates otherwise, the sides of the vehicle should be approximately parallel to the kerb or edge.

You must not park where parking is prohibited by a traffic sign or roadway markings.
