Tyres must not be excessively worn. It is a requirement that the tyres of most vehicles on the road have a minimum tread depth of 1.6 mm over the main treads. The exceptions are motor cycles and vintage vehicles for which the minimum tread depth is 1mm.

It makes sound sense to have tyres replaced before they have become worn to this degree. Tyre pressure of every tyre including the spare tyre should be checked weekly and attention paid to the recommended pressure levels.

Tyres should be examined regularly for cuts, cracks and bulges which could cause unexpected "blow-outs". Replacement tyres should be purchased from reputable dealers. Radial and cross-ply tyres must not be mixed on any one axle. A temporary use (skinny) spare tyre should only be used to complete a journey or to a tyre suppliers premises. A vehicle using such a tyre must not travel at a speed in excess of 80 kph (50mph).
